2018 sees the launch of HERA, a new company making and touring opera and music theatre by diverse women. I’m really excited to be jointly leading the company with Linda Hirst (mezzo soprano and former Head of Vocal Studies at Trinity Laban), and Simone Ibbett-Brown (mezzo soprano, director and administrator).
In May we ran a two day workshop with students from Guildhall School of Music and Drama, exploring arias by female opera composers from Francesca Caccini to Errollyn Wallen. This is the beginning of the journey to our first show, which will include a range of existing music, alongside a new commission from composer Cevanne Horrocks-Hopayian and writer Sabrina Mahfouz. Find out more by following us on twitter @wearehera or visiting www.wearehera.co.uk.
I continue to teach and direct students at Trinity Laban, where I’ve been resident director since 2009.
Since September 2009, I have taught regular acting classes with BMus and MMus Vocal Studies students, designing a syllabus which allows students to develop their skills over time, and addresses the specific needs of singers. This includes work on ensemble movement; approaching a scene, and acting through song. I also deliver seminars on the history of opera performance practice.
